Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Milly Alcock will play Supergirl in new DC films from James Gunn.

The Hollywood Reporter said Monday that Alcock will play Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman, in Gunn's DC universe.

Alcock's Supergirl is expected to appear in an unknown DC project before taking center stage in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Deadline said Alcock's Supergirl may appear in Superman Legacy, directed by Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent, aka Superman.

Alcock, an actress best known for playing the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen on the Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon, reportedly beat out Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly for the role of Supergirl.

Gunn confirmed Alcock's casting on Instagram.

"Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I'm incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by @tomking_tk, @bilquis and Ana Nogueira," he wrote.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is written by Ana Nogueira and has yet to find a director. THR said it is possible the feature will begin filming in the fall.

Helen Slater previously played Supergirl in the 1984 film Supergirl, while Melissa Benoist portrayed the character on the CW series. Sasha Calle played Supergirl in The Flash film.
