Mindy Kaling Is Almost Done Writing ‘Legally Blonde 3’—Here’s What to Expect

Mindy Kaling just confirmed that Legally Blonde 3 will certainly do the original movie justice. *Bangs gavel*

PureWow recently sat down for an exclusive interview with the 41-year-old actress, who’s currently promoting her partnership with Well Yes! (a line of nutritious soups by Campbell). While discussing the highly anticipated Legally Blonde sequel, Kaling revealed that it’s nearing completion.

“I’m almost done writing the script,” she told PureWow.

Kaling went on to share details about what fans can expect from Legally Blonde 3, which will premiere in May 2022. “It’s been really fun writing about Elle Woods not as a 22-year-old anymore, but as a mom and what it’s like for the character to go through the trials of parenthood,” she said. “You know, balancing that life with her love of the law.”

She continued, “Can a woman who’s in her 40s be as chipper and bright and cheerful as 22-year-old Elle Woods? We’ll see how her life has treated her.”

Kaling also confirmed the new movie will pay tribute to several iconic Elle Woods moments, including the “Bend and Snap.”

“I'm obsessed with the first movie. [We’re] bringing back a lot of the other characters. I can’t imagine you wouldn’t have a ‘Bend and Snap’ in this version of it. Of course, the iconic Elle Woods’s pink will definitely be in it, which—as you can tell—is my favorite color,” she explained as she pointed to her hot pink shirt.

This isn’t the first time Kaling has shared details about Legally Blonde 3. Kaling previously discussed the sequel on a recent episode of Good Morning America. Although we already knew about her involvement, the actress confirmed that Reese Witherspoon is responsible for getting her on board.

“I was nervous because the movie is so iconic. But then I thought, ‘It’d be really fun to see that character in her 40s. What is Elle Woods dealing with as a 41-year-old woman?’” she said. “And it’s been really funny to write. And I’m working on it with my friend Dan [Goor], and I think it’s going to be a great movie for Reese and people are going to love to see her in this part.”

We first learned about Kaling’s involvement with Legally Blonde 3 earlier this year. It all started when Deadline revealed that Kaling and Dan Goor (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) signed on to pen the screenplay. The outlet confirmed that Witherspoon will reprise her role as Elle Woods (thank god) and will also be producing alongside Marc Platt (La La Land).

Rumblings of a threequel began over two years ago (we’re serious) and were confirmed last August during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. At the time, Witherspoon told the publication, “Oh, it’s gonna be so fun! I got to go to a meeting the other day where we talked about all the new plot points and all the characters and some returning characters and some new characters.”

The original screenwriters, Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah, were reportedly returning to write the latest film, however, things seem to have shifted. Deadline states that Kaling and Goor’s version won’t be “a makeover,” but instead the screenplay will have an entirely “new fresh spin.”

It looks like the Legally Blonde franchise is in good hands.
