Mark Pavelich, a member of the 1980 USA “Miracle On Ice” squad, was arrested and charged with four felonies after he allegedly beat his neighbour with a pipe, according to the Duluth News Tribune.

The attack reportedly left the neighbour “in shock and broken in several places.”

Pavelich was charged in a Minnesota District Court on Monday on several counts related to striking the victim on the back, arms and legs with a metal pole. The 61-year-old was also charged for possessing a shortened shotgun which also had its serial numbers filed down.

Pavelich was ordered by a judge to undergo a mental health evaluation during his first court appearance.

"There is reason to doubt [Pavelich's] competency," Judge Michael Cuzzo wrote in a court order.

The complaint states that Pavelich was fishing with his neighbour the day of the assault. He accused the neighbour of “spiking his beer” before beating the pulp out of him, leaving him "in shock" and with "observable injuries and an obvious disfigurement of his leg."

The results of Pavelich's mental health exam must be reported to the court within 60 days in advance of a competency hearing, according to the News Tribune.

Pavelich, who played his college hockey at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, posted seven points during Team USA’s miraculous run to the 1980 Olympic gold medal.

He ended up carving himself a nice little pro career following his time with the national team, posting just shy of a point-per-game while suiting up in over 350 NHL contests, mostly with the New York Rangers.
