The Miss Holocaust Survivor Is A Touching Pageant With A Difference

They are usually known for displays of glamour and sartorial opulence, but the Miss Holocaust Survivor is a touching pageant with a difference.

It’s designed for survivors of the Holocaust to display how they have overcome the effects of unthinkable evil - and was held in Israel on Tuesday.

Each participant had the opportunity to have a glamorous makeover before strutting their stuff on the runway.

But reigning queen Hava Hershkovitz lost her crown to 83-year-old Rita Berkowitz, who entered the contest for the first time.

Berkowitz is originally from Romania and a mother of one, grandmother of six and great-grandmother of five.

She told the crowd in a defiant victory speech: All Jews from all across the world will come [to Israel], all of them. And we shall be stronger. We are not afraid of anyone. The Jew will never disappear from the world.’

The heartwarming pageant was held by Helping Hand, a charity that helps the 200,000 Holocaust survivors living in Israel.
