Missing nursing home resident found dead in walk-in freezer, Ohio officials say

An Ohio nursing home resident was found dead in a freezer after authorities searched for her for several hours, media outlets report.

The 86-year-old woman went missing early Tuesday at Maria Joseph Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Trotwood, the Dayton Daily News reported. Police went to the facility after the woman got past locked doors and other safety features, the newspaper reported.

“The alarm didn’t go off,” a nurse said to dispatchers, according to WHIO. “We don’t know how she got out.”

Police searched for the woman for about two hours, even calling in a helicopter for help, before she was found in a walk-in freezer about 4 a.m., WHIO reported.

The woman was identified as Sofiya Perel, WDTN reoprted. Her cause and manner of death have not been released, the news outlet reported.

The police investigation into Perel’s death is ongoing, WKEF reported.
