Multiple victims have been killed in a shooting outside of a Mississippi hospital on Wednesday morning, officials said, after witnesses reported shots fired near the Baptist Medical Centre in downtown Jackson.

The two victims included a male security guard and female employee of the hospital who were not immediately identified, according to local reports. Both were shot in the hospital’s west end parking lot at about 6:30am local time, police said.

The incident was domestic-related, according to Police Chief James Davis.

He said the suspected gunman pulled out a gun and shot the female hospital employee after approaching her in the parking lot.

The suspect then shot the male security guard as he attempted to intervene, before fleeing in the female employee’s vehicle.

The hospital was not placed on lockdown at the time of publication, and a spokesperson confirmed to local news agencies that the Baptist Medical Centre campus was considered safe.

The suspected shooter was later found dead at a nearby cemetery from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, WAPT-TV reported.

Police have launched an investigation into the fatal incident, according to a statement issued by the Baptist Medical Centre.

The west end parking lot of the hospital is reportedly used by employees and medical staff. The identity of the suspected shooter was not made publicly available on Wednesday afternoon.

One witness said they saw the suspect open fire on a black vehicle, before later firing shots at a nearby witness in the parking lot, CBS 42 reported.
