Moncton puts final touches on FIFA U20 Women's World Cup
Organizers for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Moncton are putting the final touches on the international soccer tournament that is set to kick off next week.
Staff are mowing the lawns, unrolling carpets and moving equipment to different parts of the venue.
The first match between England and Korea is set for Wednesday.
Stéphane Delisle, the venue general manager, said the organizers will have everything ready when the players hit the pitch next week.
"We will be ready, but I'm going to say that in a project like this we're going to be doing work right up until the end, because we will probably push ourselves to make sure we're doing that extra percent,” he said.
Event organizers took possession of the University of Moncton stadium on July 25, leaving them only 10 days to prepare for the international soccer event.
Organizers were able to do some work in advance with help from the university and the city, such as installing new artificial turf on the pitch.
Delisle said the workers and volunteers are working under some very tight timelines.
“I would say that the team has grown exponentially in the last two weeks. And I would say, every day, if you count the volunteer training we've done, the contractors we have on site and now with FIFA onsite as of today, we're getting very close to being ready,” he said.
Moncton is one of four Canadian cities hosting the U-20 Women's World Cup. Montreal, Toronto and Edmonton are the other host cities.
