Monster trucks roar in Saskatoon

Monster trucks roared in Saskatoon today as drivers showcased their ability to crush cars, jump ramps, and pop wheelies.

"Other speedways across North America host different kinds of events, but this never happened here in Saskatoon," said Brian Swidrovich, business development director of Auto Clearing Speedway.

"This is the first outdoor monster truck show in Saskatoon in almost 25 years," he added.

Saskatoon has hosted monster truck events in recent years, but they were confined indoors to hockey arenas.

Outdoors make for better show

Swidrovich explained that the outdoors provide more wide open spaces for the trucks to maneouver.

"We've brought in dirt. We've moved barricades around. We've got all kinds of ramps, cars to crush and dirt jumps. It's a lot different from what everyone is used to," he said.

Most of the trucks originated from the United States. However, this time around there is also a Canadian presence with two vehicles coming from British Columbia and Alberta. There's even one representing Weyburn, Sask.

"This is the first year in the ten years that Auto Clearing Speedway has been in existence that they've tried something other than car racing," said Swidrovich.

The Monsters & Mayhem show also included tough truck and freestyle motocross competitions.

There's one more show Saturday night at 7 p.m. CST.
