Montague in shock after double homicide of father and son
The community of Montague is shaken up after a double homicide that left a father and his adult son dead Wednesday night.
A man was arrested at 7:40 a.m. Thursday. In a news release Thursday afternoon, RCMP described him as a man in his 40s from Lower Montague. The crime scene was a home on St. Mary's Road, about 10 kilometres south of Montague.
The news was a shock to the tight-knit rural community.
Peggy James moved from Ontario to eastern P.E.I. 15 years ago to live somewhere quiet and peaceful.
Until Wednesday night, she says that’s exactly what she got.
"Our neighbours are really good people and if you need help, they're there to help you,” she said. “And we're shocked to know that this has happened in our neighbourhood."
She said neighbours are ready to rally around anyone who might need some support.
On Thursday, RCMP were in the area continuing their investigation into the deaths.
Second tragedy
It is the second tragedy to hit the area in recent months. Three teenage boys from Montague were killed in a Charlottetown fire in march.
Montague’s mayor Richard Collins says that makes the news even harder to take.
"Today we have a similar situation. Different in some ways, but yet a tragedy for a community of this size and it's sad. Very sad today."
Pearl Deveaux said she locks her doors regularly.
“I know they said they got somebody but it’s still, you don’t know why or how it happened,” she said.
Police have not released the names of the victims, or how they were killed. The news release said autopsies will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
Donald Condon says he lives in Florida in the winter months.
"After hearing that last night, I thought I was back in Florida again, because every day you hear somebody getting shot down there, but I can't imagine this happening so close to home."
The suspect is expected to appear in court Friday.
