Montreal centenarians celebrate milestone birthdays

It was a big day complete with balloons, cake and singing for nine lucky seniors who were honoured by the Jewish Eldercare Centre.

The party marked a special occasion — all nine are are centenarians, ranging in age from 100 to 106.

The residents' birthdays fall throughout the calendar year, but every summer the centre holds a communal birthday bash.

Sylvia Coleman is considered a youngster at 102. She says her secret to longevity is a mix of eating well and spending time with loved ones.

"Eat on time, and eat good things," Coleman said. "To be happy and to be with the children, that's the main thing."

For Menahem Benoliel, a former police officer from Morocco who is turning 100, it comes down to being a good person.

"Be nice to people, help everyone," Benoliel said. "Do a lot of physical activity, that's what kept me in shape."
