Montreal does Record Store Day

Shawn Ellingham opened his Plateau-Mont-Royal record store, Soundcentral, more than 30 minutes early today because the lineup outside his shop was getting, as he puts it, "pretentiously" long.

Originally conceived in the United States in 2007 to help support local record store owners, Record Store Day has grown to include many countries around the world. Countless fans line up at stores to score special Record Store Day-only releases by their favourite bands.

In Montreal, Soundcentral was just one of many stores selling special edition (or otherwise) vinyl. Owner Ellingham says his store's biggest seller so far was metal band Mastodon's special Record Store Day release.
