Montreal kayakers slowly paddling their way to Mexico
A trio of Île-Perrot kayakers are a month and a half into the journey of a lifetime.
Julien Granger, Luc Labelle and Nuka De Jocas-McCrae left Montreal's Old Port on May 16. They plan to travel along the eastern coast of the United States until they reach the tip of Yucatan, in southeastern Mexico.
"We're seeking adventure," said De Jocas-McCrae.
"We're young and we wanted to do this. There's a lot to learn and it's a chance to meet people in a humane way."
The journey is more than 9,000 km, and they estimate it will take about 15 months. So far, they've paddled nearly 700 km, with their longest stretch covering 145 km in three days.
They spent the past week hanging out in New York City, and paddling up to the Big Apple is something De Jocas-Mcrae says was a highlight of the trip so far.
"The skyscrapers were so huge beside us because we were so low in our kayaks," says De Jocas-McCrae.
"We were so impressed by the skyline, it was a real beauty to come here by kayak."
Today, Granger, Labelle and De Jocas-McCrae are getting back in their kayaks and are setting off for Sandy Hook, New Jersey as they make their way towards their goal destination for July, Virginia Beach.
