Montreal Transit left disabled man at wrong address

A West Island woman whose severely disabled son was left alone at the wrong address wants assurances from the Montreal's Transit Corporation that it won't happen again.

Claudine Asfal's son Simon El Akoury requires constant care. He has cerebral palsy, impaired hearing, can't speak and is fed through a tube.

Last Sunday, he was left at the Montreal's Children's Hospital when he was supposed to be taken to a special day camp for people with disabilities.

Someone from the camp realized El Akoury was missing and picked him up thirty minutes after he was dropped off at the wrong address but Asfal said the initial reaction to the mistake from the MTC employee she spoke with was unacceptable.

"He said: 'Well, Madame, it's okay. It happens…but it's the first time in eight years and things like that happen," said Asfal.

She said she isn't confident it won't happen again. Asfal said a similar incident happened about three months ago.

Transit spokesperson Isabelle Tremblay said the corporation is launching an internal investigation.

"We are very, very sorry about what happened last Sunday, obviously, and we take it very seriously," she said.

Tremblay said clients are very rarely dropped off at the wrong address.
