Moose carcass found wasted on Liard Highway

The fully intact carcass of a moose was found wasting on the side of the Liard Highway on Monday.

"It was just at the edge of the trees and there was a visible bullet hole in it," says Marti Lys, a renewable resources officer in the Dehcho Region.

All the meat had spoiled, she said.

The carcass was found after another wildlife officer patrolling the Liard Highway received a tip from a local hunter.

"We're thinking it probably happened around Wednesday night or Thursday night. So if anybody has seen anything around that area, they can call us and report to us," says Lys.

Wasting game in the N.W.T. can lead to a $500 fine or up to one year in jail, says Lys.

"Unfortunately we get one or two cases like this a year. I am sure there are more that happen that go unreported. We really need the public's help and public's eyes to help us do our jobs."
