More than 180 People on Royal Caribbean Cruise Fell Ill After Salmonella Outbreak
According to the CDC, the sick travelers' symptoms included diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache and muscle aches
Passengers and crew aboard Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas ship were sickened with gastrointestinal illness after a salmonella outbreak.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, 180 of the 2,172 passengers and three of the 894 crew members on the voyage were affected by the illness. Their primary symptoms were diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache and muscle aches.
The CDC shared on its website that Royal Caribbean International and the crew had reported taking measures such as notifying those on board of the outbreak, encouraging good hygiene, and increasing cleaning and disinfection procedures.
Crew members also reported collecting stool samples from people experiencing gastrointestinal illness for testing.
The CDC also said its Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) was remotely monitoring the situation and reviewing the ship’s response to the outbreak.
The cruise was traveling from Vancouver to Alaska between Sept. 20 and Sept. 27.
A Royal Caribbean representative told USA Today in a statement, “The health and safety of our guests, crew, and the communities we visit are our top priority.”
The statement continued, “To maintain an environment that supports the highest levels of health and safety onboard our ships, we implement rigorous cleaning procedures, many of which far exceed public health guidelines.”
PEOPLE reached out to Royal Caribbean for further comment, but did not immediately hear back.

The salmonella outbreak is the 10th instance of gastrointestinal illness on cruises the CDC has documented in 2024. Of the other nine, seven were caused by norovirus, one was E. coli and the other was unknown.
Earlier in September, more than 100 people traveling on P&O Cruises’ Arcadia ship fell ill during a norovirus outbreak.
The CDC reported that 128 of 1,959 passengers and 19 of 799 crew members became sick on the month-long voyage, which departed Sept. 3, and their predominant symptoms were vomiting and diarrhea.
