More COVID-19 cases at two Kamloops care homes

More positive tests continue to be found at a pair of Kamloops care homes experiencing outbreaks of COVID-19.

One more resident at Kamloops Seniors Village has tested positive for the virus, bringing the number of infected at the Aberdeen care home to 15 — nine residents and six staff. Twelve of the 15 resident cases are still active, as are five of the six staff cases.

The new resident case was found in a member of the 1B complex care unit of the facility, which is under lockdown, along with 1C as they are both part of the outbreak.

The 1A unit has also been isolated as a precaution as a test-positive staffer recently worked in the ward.

No additional staff have tested positive for the virus as of Sept. 7 and, following direction from Interior Health and a medical health officer, the facility is conducting COVID-19 nasal swab testing of all staff who have worked in 1B and 1C in the past two weeks. The health authority also directed KSV to re-swab all 1B and 1C residents who have not already tested positive.

Social visitation and recreational activity remain cancelled in 1A, 1B and 1C. Essential visitation can occur in these units, but only from fully vaccinated visitors. The lockdown does not apply to the other living units of the Hugh Allan Drive facility, which can have regular visitors with health protocols in place.

In an update posted online, KSV confirmed one palliative-care resident died from COVID-19 at the beginning of the outbreak.

While Interior Health announced the death on Sept. 1, the KSV update stated it did not initially report the death due to privacy concerns and the need for a medical health officer to determine if the death was, in fact, COVID-19-related.

“Sadly, we heard today that it was,” the online update stated.

According to the update, all residents who have tested positive are doing well and resting in their rooms, with no clinical concerns at this time. Staff members who have COVID-19 are resting at home.

Meanwhile two more staff members at The Hamlets at Westsyde have tested positive for COVID-19.

According to an update from Interior Health, as of Sept. 7, three staffers and three residents at the facility have tested positive for the COVID-19.

Interior Health announced an outbreak at The Hamlets on Sept. 3 after investigating four positive cases — three residents and one staff member.
