More federal gov't jobs cut in Edmonton

Thousands of federal civil servants are expected to learn today if they're out of a job.

Civil service unions say more than 4,000 federal employees could be affected by the latest round of job cuts.

An internal document from Human Resources Minister Diane Finley indicates 57 people in Edmonton — representing six per cent of the total federal workforce in the city — will be getting what the government calls "notification letters" this morning.

The affected employees work at Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.

The March budget outlined plans for 19,000 cuts country-wide, many of which have already been announced.

Finlay said much of work done by the workers is now being automated.

Via Rail also announced Wednesday morning, it will cut 200 unionized jobs, or about nine per cent of its positions, as the government-owned passenger rail service adjusts to federal budget cuts.

As part of its modernization plan, Via says it will also significantly improve its operations, including its tracks, stations, trains and schedules.
