A majority of Americans believe the Senate should wait to hold confirmation hearings for the next US Supreme Court Justice until after the presidential election, as hearings are set to begin for Donald Trump's pick to fill a vacancy left by the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg a few weeks before Election Day.

Fifty-two percent of registered voters in a poll from The Washington Post-ABC News believe the seat should be filled by the winner of the election, while 44 per cent of respondents agree that the hearings should continue as scheduled.

The Senate Judiciary Committee will begin hearings on Monday.

With the future of healthcare and abortion rights in the national crosshairs with a potential conservative majority on the nation’s high court, the poll found that most Americans believe the landmark abortion rights decision from the 1973 case Roe v Wade should be upheld.

Less than a quarter of respondents in the Post-ABC poll believe it should be overturned, while 14 per cent do not have an opinion.
