Family reported the 35-year-old mother missing on Sunday, July 14.

Five days later, Atlanta police say they found Chanell Crosby “unresponsive,” just after 5:30 p.m. on Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority property.

Police are now investigating her death “to determine when and where the incident occurred,” per a preliminary statement issued by the Atlanta Police Department last week.

Details of how Chanell died have not been released.

When reached by email Wednesday afternoon, John T. Predmore, a spokesman for the Atlanta Police Department declined to answer questions about the case, but said the investigation into her death “remains active and ongoing.”

Jamiren Crosby, 13, was found shot dead on Sept. 19, 2022.

At the time of her death, 11Alive reports that Chanell was fighting for justice in the homicide of her 13-year-old son, Jamiren Crosby, who was fatally shot after leaving home with friends in September 2022. His body was later located behind a townhome in Lithonia, a city in Georgia some 18 miles outside Atlanta. To date, no one has been arrested in connection with his death, the outlet reports.

On April 20, 2022, Chanell’s brother, Darrio "Polo" Giles was also found shot to death in an apartment building on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW in Atlanta. Predmore confirmed Wednesday that no one had been arrested in connection with his case either.

Chanell had started a foundation in their family name, which she said in a June 2023 interview with WSB-TV “focuses on gun violence, police brutality and community service.”

“We went around painting shelters, donating to children’s shelters and women shelters,” she told the outlet of the foundation’s work.

In a previous interview to Fox 5 Atlanta, she described her son as her "helper,” adding that he helped care for her younger daughter and son. She said the straight-A eighth grader had just made the ATL Elite Football team.

She also recalled in an interview with 11 Alive, her son asking her to be his date to his fifth grade dance. After missing her own prom, she had said it was a special do-over with her son.

With his death, she had made it her mission to make sure people did not “forget about Jamiren’s case,” she told WSB-TV, adding that she believed “there are people out there” that had answers.

Vanessa Wilson Lewis — who described herself as an “auntie” on a GoFundMe page created to help cover funeral expenses and help care for Chanell's three remaining children — said the mother “brought so much love and light into our lives.”

“Tragedy has struck for the third time with the untimely murder of our beloved Chanell Crosby,” she said, noting that the mother had “succumbed to violence.”

Police have not labeled Chanell's death as a homicide at this time.
