Mother attacked with potted plant while accepting package delivery

A Victoria-area mother was attacked in her home with a potted plant this morning, after opening her front door to receive a package delivery from FedEx.

The woman, 40, was home alone with her infant child at about 9 a.m. PT when a FedEx driver delivered a package to her home in the 2800 block of Adelaide Avenue in Saanich, B.C., according to Saanich police.

She went inside to call her husband to confirm payment for the package, when an unidentified man pushed past the FedEx driver and into the woman's home.

He tried to grab the package, and when the woman followed him, he struck her several times with a potted plant, police said in a statement.

She called 911, as did the FedEx driver who followed the suspect.

"This incident is very unusual as this residential neighbourhood is a very safe area in our community." said Sgt. Jereme Leslie of the Saanich police in a release.

Saanich police arrested the 33-year-old suspect, who they say is known to them. He remains in custody, and police plan to recommend charges of assault with a weapon and being unlawfully in a dwelling house.

The woman was transported to hospital with what police call non-life threatening injuries.

Police have not disclosed whether the man had any connection to the homeowners or the package.
