A mother of a ten-year-old boy shaved her son’s head and made him walk around a supermarket dressed in a tutu as an public punishment for his bad behaviour at school.

Police were called to a Wal-Mart store in Rock Hill South Carolina early on Sunday morning where they found the boy wearing a tutu, women’s boots, a women’s undergarment and a T-shirt with “various permanent marker writing underneath,” according to their official report.

The mother told shocked officers she was punishing her son “for fighting and making homophobic remarks in school.”

Apparently, “corporal punishment” had been “ineffective” on her son, and she told police she had been attempting to “embarrass” the ten-year-old into improving his behaviour.

His head had been shaved in an “unusual manner, bald on top with a patch of wig on the front of his head,” and she had also written the word “bad on the back of his head in permanent marker,” said police.

The woman was not charged, but has been referred to social services after being informed her punishment tactics were unacceptable, Rock Hill police spokesman Mark Bollinger told The Washington Post.

“We’re not going to charge the mother with anything,” he said. “The incident apparently shocked some customers and some some of the staff, and they gave us a call.”

South Carolina is a conservative state in the Southern United States and such public punishment was “unusual”, Bollinger added.
