Mount Sima draws spring crowd amid shaky ski season down south

While ski resorts in British Columbia and Alberta have been suffering from low snowfall this season, Yukon's Mount Sima seems to be faring better.

There were smiles at the hill outside of Whitehorse last week as warm, sunny weather brought out the spring break crowds.

"Christmas break and spring break can make or break a ski hill, and for March break we have had a fantastic two weeks," Cindy Chandler told CBC News.

Sima's general manager said an average of 300 skiers and snowboarders hit the slopes each day during the break.

That's good news for the ski hill, which has had recent financial struggles.

Chandler said the conditions were buoyed by a good snowfall just before the holiday.

"That just freshened everything up, so it's really allowed us to go right through the two weeks with really, really good conditions," she said. "Sun's been shining, we've been hovering around zero degrees so we haven't lost anything to the melt that you experience in town."

'The snow is great'

Dominic Bradford, a Whitehorse resident, was enjoying Mount Sima with his kids on Friday. He's not envious of any Yukoners who headed south for spring break.

"I don't why you'd want to leave the Yukon at this time of year — this is the best time of year to be here," he said. "The weather's nice, the snow is great. This has been a really nice day."

Sima is scheduled to stay open until the middle of April with special events planned for April 11 and 12.
