Mountie charged with assault in The Pas domestic incident

Suspect injured in Swan River RCMP arrest, prompting IIU probe

An RCMP officer in The Pas, Man., has been charged with assault in connection with a domestic incident that allegedly happened while he was off duty in August.

The charge was laid following an investigation by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU), which reviews all serious on-duty and off-duty incidents involving police officers in the province.

In a news release Thursday, the IIU says there are reasonable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred in that case.

The charged officer is scheduled to appear in court in The Pas on Nov. 30.

The IIU previously said it was contacted after a person who was in a domestic relationship with the officer went to the health centre in The Pas on Aug. 9, complaining of difficulty breathing.

The victim was treated for a broken rib, which investigators consider to be a serious injury.

The IIU did not give any further details about the case, as it's now before the courts.
