‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ Will Return for Season 2
We have good news and bad news, readers. Let’s start with the bright spot: Mr. & Mrs. Smith will return to Amazon Prime Video for a second season. The bad news? Maya Erskine and Donald Glover might not reprise their roles. According to Variety’s sources, the stars are not expected to join season 2.
Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon MGM Studios, confirmed the show’s renewal. However, Amazon did not comment on the future of Glover’s and Erskine’s characters. “We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, is in the works for our global Prime Video customers,” Salke said. “The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, hot reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane. We are proud to bring you another season filled with unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”
If you’re catching up—Mr. & Mrs. Smith is adapted from the 2005 film of the same name, which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. In season 1, the Smiths are played by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. When an intelligence agency pairs them together, they’re given new identities: John and Jane Smith, a married couple living in New York City. Their mission is simple: Follow instructions and don’t get caught.
Naturally, John and Jane run into a few issues. Their missions are more complicated than expected; their boss is a bit shady; and to top things off, they fall in love, fight, and nearly kill each other. Oh, and their neighbor won’t stay out of their business. I won’t spoil the finale, but it ends on quite the cliff-hanger.
Until more news emerges about season 2, Sloane hopes viewers will be satisfied with the first season. “The entire season is attempting to subvert the genre while still being really satisfying to people who love the movie, and I think that people who love the movie will be incredibly pleased with the way that our finale wraps up,” she said. “I feel like we’ve really earned the finale in terms of its gloriousness, but I also feel like people who have never even heard of the original IP of Mr. & Mrs. Smith will watch that and feel like it is a well-rounded, exciting, shoot-’em-up romance with a really interesting ending. And I think that ending is something that will have a lot of people talking."
