MUN vice-president of research Richard Marceau dies suddenly

Memorial University's vice-president of research has died at the age of 63.

Richard Marceau, originally from North Bay, Ont., joined MUN in St. John's 2013.

"During his time in Newfoundland and Labrador he worked tirelessly to enhance Memorial's research capacity so that this university and its people can continue to positively impact the world around us," MUN President Gary Kachanoski said in an announcement on the university's website.

"Daily his personal approach was the same — bringing a kind and positive outlook to the challenges and opportunities of academia, as well as the challenges that life brings us all."

Marceau graduated from Quebec's McGill University in 1977 and began his career as an electric power engineer the following year.

After 12 years working in the industry, he began work towards his PhD, which he completed in 1993.

He was a registered professional engineer in the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario and Quebec.
