The voting day for the Mushkegowuk Council grand chief position has been postponed for 30 days.
The new by-election voting date is Friday, Feb. 25, pending updates from the Porcupine Health Unit, said Chief Electoral Officer Sherry Davey.
The original date was slated for Jan. 25.
The decision was made at a special Council of Chiefs meeting last Friday, Jan. 7. Davey said the decision to move the date will not impact the by-election process.
She also said she was receiving concerns from the membership regarding rising COVID-19 cases in the communities and across the province.
The official candidates for the grand chief position are Ernest Beck, Alison Linklater, Mike Metatawabin and Andrew Solomon. The selected grand chief will serve the remaining term until Mushkegowuk Council’s next general election in August 2023.
In October, the former grand chief Jonathan Solomon retired from politics and resigned to focus on his health and family.
