Myrtle Beach man has stake in horse running in Kentucky Derby. Here are odds it will win
A Myrtle Beach man has a big stake in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.
Paul Lawson, a lawyer, is part-owner of the thoroughbred Confidence Game, who is in the running to take home the $3 million purse.
Lawson is a member of Ocean Reef Racing, a horse racing syndicate made up of 12 friends.
This is Lawson’s first time at the Kentucky Derby.
“Winning would be something we haven’t grasped yet,” Lawson said Thursday while on his way to Louisville. “It’s the hardest one to get into and the hardest one to win.”
Lawson said Confidence Game is in post position four. The thoroughbred’s odds are 20-1 set by Churchill Downs, where the Derby takes place in Louisville.
This year’s “Run for the Roses” will mark Confidence Game’s eighth career race. The racehorse is fresh off winning the $1 million Rebel Stakes in February.
“It gives me goosebumps to even think about what could happen,” Lawson said in a statement. “I’ll be a nervous wreck until we come out of the starting gate on the first Saturday in May.”
