N.W.T. MLAs have voted to reprimand Tu Nedhé-Wiilideh MLA Richard Edjericon and fine him $2,500 for breaking the MLA code of conduct and trying to get a nurse fired.

Monday's vote, moved by Yellowknife North MLA Shauna Morgan, passed in the legislature Monday with no discussion.

The vote comes after the N.W.T.'s integrity commissioner issued a report on Oct. 10 saying Edjericon had violated the code of conduct and "blindly and willfully [repeated] unsubstantiated allegations" against a nurse in Fort Resolution in 2022.

Integrity commissioner David Phillip Jones found Edjericon had heard unproven allegations that the nurse had been unprofessional and racist toward Fort Resolution residents, and "had an agenda" to remove her.

For his part, Edjericon said he accepted the findings and would pay the fine if the assembly voted to issue one.

However, he said he did not accept the findings of another investigation — the one that cleared the nurse of wrongdoing.
