‘Naked and Afraid XL’ contestants release 80-pound anaconda out of respect of natives: ‘Fills the heart and the soul’

Survivalist Waz Addy scored big on Naked and Afraid XL, Sunday, when he caught a twelve foot anaconda snake.

“This snake is as big around as most persons’ thighs,” exclaimed his partner Matt Wright. “This thing's 80 pounds. It's got fat on it too.”

Waz and his partners, Matt and Dan Link, have to survive for three more weeks in the Amazon so that much protein would be a game changer, but Waz had second thoughts. He knows that the people of the Amazon consider the animal to be a “religious symbol.”

“I gotta be honest with you though,” Waz interjected in the revelry. “Look, it's a lot of meat and in a survival situation this is a hard thing to put down, you know, but obviously we don't want to kill things we don't need to kill.”

Since the group still had some leftover anteater stew back at camp, they decided to let the huge meal go. Viewers appreciated the gesture of kindness, and for the men, releasing the snake was a special moment.

“The Amazon people believe this animal has got magic powers and has actually crafted many of the Amazon basin,” Matt said. “You know, even though it makes the stomach growl a bit it fills the heart and the soul to watch an anaconda go unharmed back into the wild. One of the most beautiful moments on a Naked and Afraid challenge.”
