NASA images show P.E.I. ice cover now versus same time last year

Two stunning images from NASA show the difference in ice cover on P.E.I. this year versus the same time last year.

The photos of Feb. 5, 2016 and Feb. 6, 2015, were posted to twitter by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans' Gulf region account.

The screengrabs were taken from NASA's Worldview website, an interactive interface that allows users to browse near real-time satellite imagery anywhere on the globe.

The infamous 2014-15 winter season battered P.E.I. for months, breaking snowfall records by the end of March with a total snowfall of 463 cm.

The 2015-16 winter season, by contrast, has so far been relatively mild.

In January of 2016, the mean temperature was –5, compared to –8.7 C in 2015, according to Environment Canada.
