Two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion was reportedly detained for bringing a gun into Mexico in late January, leading to a significant fine. A press release from a prosecutor in the state of Quintana Roo claims that someone from Nevada named Kyle Thomas "B," presumably Busch, was found leaving the country with an illegal firearm and detained. In addition, it claims that the prosecutor obtained a conviction of "three years [and] six months in prison."

Busch put out a statement this afternoon, confirming that he was briefly detained and claiming he "made a mistake by forgetting" that he was still carrying a concealed carry weapon he claims he is permitted to hold in the U.S. Busch goes on to claim that he "fully cooperated with authorities, accepted the penalties, and returned to North Carolina."

The press release put out by the prosecutor claims he was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months of prison time in addition to a fine, however, Busch has returned to the U.S. since and "[considers] the issue closed."

Presumably, that resolution does not include any sort of unannounced suspended jail time, either in Mexico or within the U.S.

The incident reportedly took place on January 27th, more than a week before Busch raced in NASCAR's pre-season Clash at the Coliseum this past weekend. That marked his first race for Richard Childress Racing after 13 years and two championships at Joe Gibbs Racing. Childress, the owner of RCR, briefly served as the First Vice President of the pro-firearm lobbying group the National Rifle Association.
