Progressive Conservative MLA Natalie Jameson is leaving the provincial cabinet in order to seek the nomination for the Conservative Party of Canada in the federal riding of Charlottetown.

Jameson was the minister of education and early years and minister responsible for the status of women.

"I want to thank Premier Dennis King for putting his trust in me to serve Islanders in cabinet, and thank all of my colleagues for their support and encouragement to take this next step in my political career," she said in a news release Wednesday morning.

King shuffled his cabinet Wednesday morning in light of Jameson's announcement.

Jameson was first elected to the P.E.I. Legislature in 2019. She joined the cabinet in February 2020 as environment minister and minister responsible for the status of women.

She served in the environment role for a year before moving to education and early years, while retaining the status of women portfolio.

Former provincial Liberal cabinet minister Doug Currie and Charlottetown lawyer Catherine Parkman had previously announced they are seeking the Charlottetown nomination for the federal Conservatives.
