National Baseball Championship underway in Fredericton

Hundreds of baseball fans packed the bleachers at Royals Field in Fredericton to watch dozens of home runs Wednesday night as the 2016 Senior Men's National Baseball Championships got underway.

After an opening ceremony honouring Fredericton former players of the tournament each province sent their best slugger to crack as many balls as they could over the fence for the home run derby title.

The top four sluggers moved on to a semi-final, battling each other for the chance to win a thousand dollars.

At the end of the night Team Manitoba took the title with hitter Matt Gunning knocking dozens of balls skyward over the course of the evening.

A full slate of 26 games are scheduled to start Thursday at 9 a.m. at Royals Field and Thompson Field as a part of the National tournament.

The gold medal game will take place at Royals Field at 8 p.m. on Sunday.
