National Music Centre to create Calgary 'music mile'

Calgary has a great music scene, but could it be better by a mile?

That's the question the National Music Centre and others are asking after gathering on Sunday to contemplate whether to establish a "music mile" in Calgary.

The original plan was to discuss a music district, with the NMC's Studio Bell and revived King Eddy as the anchor on Ninth Avenue.

Included in the district would be Festival Hall, Ironwood and the Blues Can in Inglewood — already an attractive destination for its character, shopping and eating — but that idea is already shifting.

"It's a broader conversation really than a physical mile, or a kilometre, if you know what I mean," said Andrew Mosker, president and CEO of NMC.

"It's everyone, really, that's in the inner city and involved in live music, trying to better coordinate our efforts."

That said, the idea of a district isn't off the table just yet, and as the conversation progresses, the group will be looking at places like Memphis, Nashville and Austin for inspiration and to see what works.

As it stands, the only concrete aspect is continued conversations and a website that will promote Calgary's live music scene.

And that name? That's up for debate as well.

What do you think a music district, or mile, or kilometre should be called?
