Natural gas leak in Cartierville forces daycare's evacuation

A natural gas line pierced by workers excavating in a residential area of Montreal's Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough has forced the evacuation of a daycare.

Other evacuations may be necessary, and electricity to the neighbourhood could remain out until around 2 p.m. as crews work to stop the gas leak which occurred on de Louisbourg Street near Michel-Sarrazin Street.

A fire department bus and city buses were called in to shelter those forced out of their homes and workplaces.

Officials estimated it could take one or two hours to stop the leak. Gaz Métro will then have to repair the damaged line.

Parts of de Louisbourg and Michel Sarrazin streets are closed to traffic while crews work to fix the gas leak.
