NC home to some of nation’s best places to stay, report finds. Why visitors love them
If you’re dreaming of a top-notch place to get away, you might not have to look far.
That’s because North Carolina is home to two of the nation’s best places for travelers to stay, a new report finds. The state’s Beaufort Hotel was named the No. 1 boutique hotel, and the C.W. Worth House in Wilmington ranks as the top bed and breakfast in the United States.
USA Today’s 10Best, which created the best-of list, said other North Carolina accommodations that earned top spots in the rankings were:
The Everett Hotel in Bryson City at No. 3 in boutique hotels
Graylyn Estate in Winston-Salem at No. 5 in boutique hotels
The Historic Magnolia House in Greensboro at No. 10 in bed and breakfasts
To determine the nation’s best places to spend the night, 10Best said its editors reviewed nominations from travel experts. The website then allowed people to vote on the finalists up to one time each day for a month, resulting in the readers’ choice award winners that were announced Friday, Aug. 18.
Why do visitors love the NC hotels?
Among boutique hotels — defined as those offering “a more customized experience and the best modern amenities and service” — one place in North Carolina reigned supreme. The Beaufort Hotel, located in the Eastern North Carolina town of the same name, received nods for offering activities near its creekside location.
“Walking tours, bird-watching, and scuba diving are among the many adventures to choose from at Beaufort Hotel,” 10Best wrote in its report. “Sustainability practices and accommodations are greatly admired by guests during their stay, as well as rooms with waterfront views.”
Meanwhile, the other two top boutique hotel destinations — The Everett Hotel in the mountain town of Bryson City and the Graylyn Estate in Winston-Salem — also were praised for their locations and guest perks.
When it came to bed and breakfasts, the C.W. Worth House in Wilmington landed on top. 10Best said the inn offers visitors a cozy setting without being far from favorite tourist spots.
“The property is close enough to downtown and the Wilmington Riverwalk that you can walk to many restaurants and attractions,” 10Best wrote.
Also ranking among the best bed and breakfasts was The Historic Magnolia House in Greensboro, where “music legends including Tina Turner, James Brown, and Ray Charles have stayed,” according to 10Best.
Despite the nationwide accolades for boutique hotels and bed and breakfasts, no North Carolina-based accommodations earned top spots in the other 10Best categories. Those focused on the best all-inclusive resorts, family-friendly resorts, destination resorts, waterfront hotels and historic hotels in the country, results show.
North Carolina resorts missed those lists a month after Travel + Leisure ranked five of them among the best places to stay in the South, McClatchy News reported.
In the past, 10Best has told McClatchy News via email that it doesn’t release how many people vote in its vacation contests.
