For Dave Augustyn, a new chapter begins.

Announced Friday as the NDP candidate for Niagara West, Augustyn sat as mayor of the town of Pelham from 2006 to 2018. Since his time in office, Augustyn has been working as director of development at Family and Children’s Services Niagara and a director of Niagara Peninsula Energy.

Niagara's three sitting NDP MPPs — Niagara Falls riding's Wayne Gates, Niagara Centre's Jeff Burch and St. Catharines' Jennie Stevens — joined NDP leader Andrea Horwarth outside the Pelham Public Library Maple Acre branch in Fenwick for the announcement.

“I can’t tell you how thrilled I am,” Horwath said as she announced Augustyn as the NDP candidate for Niagara West.

Augustyn was elected by democratic vote of NDP members of the surrounding area and Horwarth said that he is “exactly the kind of leader, exactly the kind of representative that people that make up this riding deserve and need.”

Augustyn said he was excited to fulfil the position, citing his work as former mayor, regional councillor, working on projects such as the Fenwick library and the Meridian Centre as examples of his involvement in the community.

“The pandemic reawakened an understanding that we’re all in this together,” he said, adding that he was proud of the community for their co-operation at this time.

He said there were many issues across the riding that needed urgent attention, the main one he said was affordability in both housing and the general cost of living.

“it’s important to do that, and provide dignity to those across the riding,” he said.

Beyond that, he listed the importance of environmentally friendly initiatives and programming, connecting and understanding the needs of grape growers and farmers and increasing the number of GO stations in the area also as an issue of importance.

“That’s why I’m here today, to stand for and to fight for the common good in our province,” Augustyn said.

The Niagara West riding, currently represented by PC MPP Sam Oosterhoff, includes Pelham, Grimsby, Lincoln, West Lincoln, Wainfleet and a sliver of west St. Catharines
