Edmonton snowfall leads to hundreds of collisions

Edmonton's snowfall continues to make driving hazardous across the city.

This morning's commute saw 31 more collisions reported, up from the 28 reported during Friday morning's rush hour.

Driving conditions were poor most of the weekend with police responding to 19 injury accidents and 209 collisions between midnight Saturday and midnight Sunday.

There were 55 hit-and-runs reported during the same period.

City plows worked throughout the weekend, with the city finally ending the parking ban at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Officials say they handed out a whopping 1,485 tickets and towed 85 vehicles over the weekend while enforcing the ban.

Crews are currently scheduled to start blading neighbourhoods Tuesday at midnight.

Records at the Edmonton International Airport show 20.2 centimetres accumulated between midnight Thursday and 11 p.m. Sunday, bringing the total snowfall for March up to 27.8 centimetres.

This is about 10 centimetres more than the seasonal average for March, and five centimetres more than last year.

Within the past decade, 2006 saw the highest snowfall — recording a total of 42.6 centimetres.
