Netflix's League of Legends: Arcane bags 9 Annie Awards

Arcane, the League of Legends (LoL) animated series on Netflix, shook viewers during its premiere in November and has astounded audiences beyond the gaming community.

The show has even earned acclaim from critics, as it swept the most accolades at the 49th Annie Awards on Saturday (12 March).

The Annie Awards are honors presented by the Los Angeles section of the International Animated Film Association, ASIFA-Hollywood. They've been awarded each year since 1972 to acknowledge excellence in animation, both in film and television.

For 2021, there were 356 different categories represented by close to 80 different participants. League of Legends: Arcane was nominated for nine awards, winning all of them.

Arcane also had the most accolades at the ceremony, beating highly acclaimed series like Love, Death + Robots, Star Wars: Visions, and Castlevania.

The LoL-inspired series even beat Best Feature winner The Mitchells vs. The Machines, a Netflix film that won eight categories, and popular Disney film Encanto, which won three.

The Arcane team won the Outstanding Achievement for Production Design in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production for the episode Happy Progress Day! Arcane won against fellow nominees Love, Death + Robots, Arlo the Alligator Boy, Maya and the Three, and Yuki 7.

Meanwhile, artist and illustrator Evan Monteiro won the Outstanding Achievement for Character Design in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production for the episode Some Mysteries Better Left Unsolved, beating contenders like Batman: The Long Halloween, Kid Cosmic, Maya and the Three, and Yuki 7.

Arcane’s Guillaume Degroote, Aurélien Ressencourt, Martin Touzé, Frédéric Macé, Jérôme Dupré also won Outstanding Achievement for Animated Effects in an Animated Television/Broadcast Production for Episode 8: Oil and Water, beating Castlevania, Maya and the Three, Shaun the Sheep: The Flight Before Christmas, and Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans.

Episode 6: When These Walls Come Tumbling Down won three awards. The Riot Games and Studio Fortiche production won Best General Audience Animated Television/Broadcast Production for the said episode, winning against Love, Death + Robots, Bob’s Burgers, Star Wars: Visions, and Tuca & Bertie.

The episode also won Outstanding Achievement for Storyboarding in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production, beating Invincible, Kid Cosmic, Love, Death + Robots, and The Ghost of Molly McGee.

Finally, Ella Purnell also received an award for Best Voice Acting in TV/Media in her role as Jinx in the show's sixth episode.

The finale of Arcane Season 1, The Monster You Created, also received three awards, including Best Character Animation in TV/Media, Best Direction in TV/Media, and Best Writing in TV/Media.

Animator Léa Chervet from the Arcane team won Outstanding Achievement for Character Animation in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production, against Love, Death + Robots, Namoo, Ultra City Smiths, and We the People.

Pascal Charue, Arnaud Delord, Barthelemy Maunoury from Studio Fortiche won Outstanding Achievement for Directing in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production for the heart-wrenching finale as well. The team won against Amphibia, Crossing Swords, Hilda and the Mountain King, and Maya and the Three.

Riot Games' Creative Director Christian Linke and Creative Designer Alex Yee won Outstanding Achievement for Writing in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production for the finale masterpiece.

Arcane is a League of Legends-inspired animation created by Riot Games in partnership with Studio Fortiche, and debuted on 6 November 2021.

Season 1 of Arcane followed two sisters, Jinx and Vi through their difficult childhood and the different paths they took as adults. Meanwhile, the conflict between Piltover and Zaun escalates over the invention of the Hextech Crystal, and the discovery of Shimmer.

The series topped Netflix charts globally in November when it was premiered, and the theme song “Enemy” by Imagine Dragons also topped Spotify Charts for the three weeks after Arcane’s release.

Arcane has been renewed for Season 2 and is currently under production.
