Netflix is finalising a deal to pick up forthcoming Amy Adams thriller The Woman In The Window from Disney, according to reports.

Per Deadline, the streaming giant would be buying the movie - which also stars Gary Oldman, Julianne Moore, Anthony Mackie and Jennifer Jason Leigh - from Disney as one of the movies it acquired from its takeover of the 20th Century Fox studio.

Adapted by Darkest Hour director Joe Wright, it finds Adams playing an agoraphobic child psychologist who holes up in her New York apartment and become fixated with her neighbours, a married couple whom she spies on.

When the wife disappears, she becomes convinced of foul play, in a plot reminiscent of that seen in Hitchcock classic Rear Window.

The film is adapted from the best-selling novel by A.J. Finn, the pen name of writer Dan Mallory, which hit the number one slot in the book charts and sealed the author a two-million dollar, two-book deal, as well as a reported million dollars from the movie option.

However, a planned release of the movie in 2019 was delayed following poor response from test audiences, with The Hollywood Reporter carrying stories of reshoots to repair a 'confused' third act.

“We’re dealing with a complex novel,” said the then Fox 2000 studio president Elizabeth Gabler.

“We tested the movie really early for that very reason. We wanted to make it better, and we’ve had Disney’s full support in doing that.”

The release of the movie was then delayed again due to the coronavirus lockdown, and may now sidestep a theatrical release for a streaming one.

It would follow a number of movies taking such a step in the wake of cinemas remaining closed.

Apple similarly acquired the World War II thriller Greyhound, starring Tom Hanks, from Sony taking it straight to streaming.
