Netflix's Uncorked spoilers ahead!

Prentice Penny has weighed in on his directorial debut Uncorked's shock ending.

Starring Mamoudou Athie as Elijah, a wine-lover with aspirations of becoming a master sommelier, he goes against his father's wishes to join the family business by being accepted into a prestigious school.

However, there's a twist in the tale, as Elijah fails an exam that he ultimately can't afford to.

"To me, it was kind of the point of the movie, right?" Prentice recently told Collider. "Which is, you don't always get what you're trying to go after. Really the point is the dad kind of says to him earlier on in the movie 'You never stick with anything. When things get hard, you give up.'

"And what he's really trying to do is grow his son into a man, right?"

"I was playing with this interesting thing to me, which is it's very ironic that the very way he has to become a man is by separating himself from his father and still going after what he wants.

"It's never really about when you get it because a lot of times in life, you don't get the thing [you want]. It's what you do when you don't get the thing that's the most important part. That's what makes you, I think, root for this character," he continued.

Love it or hate it, the message Prentice aimed to translate on-screen is: "You can put in hard work all the time, and it doesn't necessarily mean anything.

"It's really about saying more about you when you're [thinking about] failure than it does when you have the success."

Uncorked is available to stream on Netflix.
