SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Tuesday (28 September) confirmed 2,236 new COVID-19 cases in Singapore – taking the country's total case count to 91,775 – and five more deaths due to the disease.

Tuesday marks the first time over 2,000 daily cases were reported in Singapore and comes after the second-highest daily count of 1,939 new infections recorded on Sunday.

It is also the ninth day in a row where fatalities from the virus are reported. Singapore's 81st through 85th COVID-19 fatalities are all Singaporeans: four men, aged 69, 73, 74, 79, and one woman, 77.

Among them, two had been unvaccinated against COVID-19, one had been partially vaccinated and two had been fully vaccinated. All five had various underlying medical conditions and are among 30 people who have died from the disease here this month.

Of Tuesday's new cases, 2,226 are local infections: 1,711 are in the community, while 515 are dormitory residents. Among the local cases are 483 people above the age of 60, said the MOH.

The remaining 10 cases are imported, of whom six were detected upon their arrival in Singapore, while four developed the illness during their stay-home notice or isolation period.

Eleven active COVID-19 clusters in Singapore, including six dorms, are being closely monitored, said the MOH.

Of the list of monitored clusters, the highest number of 40 new cases – already quarantined – was added to the cluster at the Woodlands dorm. The cluster now has 216 cases.

Twenty new cases – already quarantined – were added to the cluster at the Blue Stars dorm, totalling 401 infections. Fifteen new cases – already quarantined – were also added to the cluster at the Avery Lodge dorm, totalling 256 infections.

All three clusters are classified as intra-dormitory transmissions among residents, with no evidence of spread beyond the premises.

Two new cases were also added to the cluster at Man Fatt Lam Elderly Joy Daycare Centre, totalling 11 infections. Of them, 10 are clients, and one is a staff member. The centre has been closed since Saturday.

At the current rate of infection, daily new cases in Singapore are expected to rise to 3,200 this weekend, authorities had said.

209 require oxygen supplementation; 30 in ICU

As of Tuesday, 1,325 cases are currently warded, most of whom are well and under observation.

There are currently 209 cases of serious illness requiring oxygen supplementation and 30 in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Of those who have fallen very ill, 201 are patients above the age of 60, said the MOH.

Apart from the 85 patients who have died from COVID-19 complications, 15 others who tested positive for the virus were determined to have died from unrelated causes, including three whose deaths were attributed to a heart attack and another four whose deaths were attributed to coronary heart disease.

Over the last 28 days, the percentage of local cases who were asymptomatic or had mild symptoms is 98 per cent. Over the same period, 408 cases required oxygen supplementation, 47 had been in the ICU, and 28 died.

As of Monday, about 9.13 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered under the national vaccination programme, including 172,090 booster doses. Some 4.59 million have received at least one dose of the vaccine, with some 4.48 million having completed the full vaccination regimen.

To date, about 500,000 eligible seniors have been invited to receive their booster doses.

Separately, 194,270 doses of other vaccines recognised in the World Health Organization’s Emergency Use Listing (WHO EUL) have been administered as of Monday, covering 97,311 individuals.

This means that 82 per cent of the population have completed their full regimen, or received two doses of COVID-19 vaccines, and 85 per cent have received at least one dose.
