New Zealand rugby player suspended 10 days for allegedly violating opponent with finger
New Zealand rugby player Kenny Edwards was suspended for 10 matches after he allegedly violated an opponent with his finger during a match, according to Sky Sports.
Edwards was accused of putting his finger in an opponent's anus during a match against the Catalans Dragons on Thursday. The Rugby Football League reviewed the incident, and charged Edwards with a Grade F offense, which is the most serious charge the league can place on a player. A Grade F charge can result in a minimum punishment of eight matches.
An independent tribunal reviewed the match, and held a hearing. Edwards reportedly admitted to his actions. As a result, he was banned for 10 matches and fined roughly $690.
Edwards played for the Dragons before joining the Huddersfield Giants in 2019 on a three-year deal.
The Giants lost Thursday's game 50-12.
Kenny Edwards receives lengthy punishment for Grade F offense
Edwards' punishment by the tribunal is long compared to players who have been involved in similar incidents. Dragons player Joel Tomkins was accused of the same thing last season, and received an eight-match ban. Two other players — Tommy Makinson and Tom Lineham — were suspended five and eight games respectively after they were accused of grabbing an opposing player's testicles, according to Sky Sports.
