LA PRAIRIE, Que. — Quebec provincial police say the newborn child of a woman who reportedly gave birth in a vehicle has died.

A police spokesperson says officers from the Roussillon police force responded to a call from a 38-year-old woman who was pulled over on the side of the road in La Prairie, southeast of Montreal.

They say the woman and child were the only ones in the car when local officers arrived Thursday evening.

The investigation has been handed over to the Quebec provincial police major crimes unit, which is an automatic process when a young child dies.

A police spokesperson says an autopsy will be carried out to help determine the cause of death.

Police say they'll also meet with the woman when her health permits.
