OTTAWA — Canadians have chosen another minority Liberal government — almost identical to the one it replaced — to finish the fight against COVID-19 and rebuild the shattered economy. Precisely how stable a minority remains to be seen, as results were still trickling in and there were tight contests in dozens of ridings as the clock ran out on Monday night. There are also almost 800,000 mail-in ballots to be counted, starting Tuesday, which could yet change the preliminary results in many of thos

The Canadian dollar strengthened against its U.S. counterpart in Asian trading on Tuesday as oil prices rose and a projected election win for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal party reassured investors that economic support would continue. Trudeau's Liberals were on track to win the Canadian election, the CBC and CTV television networks projected as results trickled in, but they looked set to fall short of their goal for a majority win. "This does look like a decisive win for the Liberals that essentially preserves the status quo and ensures that the fiscal spending plans that have supported the economy for the last year and half are likely to continue," said Karl Schamotta, chief market strategist at Cambridge Global Payments.

NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) -British Prime Minister Boris Johnson once worried that his friendliness with former U.S. President Donald Trump would leave him out in the cold under Democrat Joe Biden, but his meetings at the White House on Tuesday got off to a good start. Johnson first met Vice President Kamala Harris, who said the United States and Britain are more interconnected than ever before. Johnson praised the U.S. military's role in the "Kabul airlift" and thanked the U.S. government for lifting a ban last year on imports of British beef imposed after an outbreak of mad cow disease.

Global markets started the week on a turbulent note after fears that Evergrande's troubles could lead to a fallout for the Chinese and global economies prompted a selloff in riskier assets.

LA LAGUNA, Spain (AP) — Giant rivers of lava tumbled slowly but relentlessly toward the sea Monday after a volcano erupted on a Spanish island off northwest Africa, with prompt evacuations helping to avoid casualties.
