VANCOUVER — A court injunction against old-growth logging protests on Vancouver Island has been extended until next fall in a British Columbia Court of Appeal decision that overturns a lower-court ruling. In a unanimous decision Wednesday, a panel of three judges granted the appeal by forestry company Teal Cedar Products Ltd. of a B.C. Supreme Court decision that denied the company's application to extend the injunction by one year. More than 1,100 people have been arrested while protesting old-
WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans' faith in science is falling as Democrats rely on it even more, with a trust gap in science and medicine widening substantially during the COVID-19 pandemic, new survey data shows. It’s the largest gap in nearly five decades of polling by the General Social Survey, a widely respected trend survey conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago that has been measuring confidence in institutions since 1972. That is unsurprising to more than a dozen scientists reached f
Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole says the unvaccinated truckers rolling into Ottawa is a “symbol” of the frustration they feel toward Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his pandemic policies like vaccine mandates. He also denounced individuals involved in the convoy who are pushing extremist ideas.
Another weekend storm is on the way for Prince Edward Island. Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for all three counties in the province Wednesday morning. The statement said Environment Canada is monitoring what is expected to be a "very intense winter storm" that would have impact on Saturday into Sunday. "Another nor'easter looks to move through the region but exactly what and how much of it falls is still a bit uncertain. The latest guidance does show all of P.E.I. seeing h
LONDON (AP) — Premier League clubs must have a minimum of four positive coronavirus cases within their playing squad before requesting a postponement, according to new guidelines announced on Wednesday and taking effect next month. Previously, teams had to show they did not have 13 senior players plus a goalkeeper available before asking for a game to be postponed. That also took into account factors such as injuries and players being on international duty. There have been 22 postponements since
SURREY, B.C. — The Mounties called in explosive experts after a person walked into one of their offices in Surrey, B.C., with a grenade on Thursday. The RCMP say someone went to their Guildford office to hand over the device, saying it was found at a nearby park. The office and surrounding area had to be evacuated because it was unclear if the grenade was still functioning. Streets around the detachment were also closed as a precaution. Const. Sarbjit Sangha says in a news release that anyone wh
Ottawa police say they have been in touch with leaders of a trucker convoy over weekend protest plans in the capital and are getting ready for several scenarios — including violence.
Conservative Party Leader Erin O’Toole said Thursday that he would meet with truckers on Friday as a trucker convoy rumbles toward Ottawa. O’Toole said the convoy was a symbol of the division in Canada and appealed to Canadians to show compassion toward truckers and those who haven’t been vaccinated.
The first trucks in a massive national convoy that was organized to protest the federal government's COVID-19 vaccine mandate for cross-border drivers are due to arrive in the Ottawa area today. The convoy of big rigs has been gaining participants and supporters as it rolls across the country from all directions for a weekend rally in the capital. In Toronto Thursday crowds of people lined part of the route, waving Canadian flags and holding up signs denouncing the vaccine mandate as they cheere
It's been a tough month for Larry Richards. He's the manager and ice tech of the Montague Curling Club where, this month, curlers were going to gather for the 2022 P.E.I. Scotties Tournament of Hearts and then later, the 2022 P.E.I. Tankard. Rising COVID cases put a stop to that. Restrictions that followed cut business even further, when all rinks and clubs had to shut down completely in mid-January. "Curling and winter go together. Members can't get out to curl, and we can only run from October
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams started together for the first time in almost three years, and Jesús Ferreira was picked over Ricardo Pepi at forward for the United States' World Cup qualifier against El Salvador on Thursday night. U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter changed five starters from the previous qualifier, a 1-1 draw at Jamaica in November. Goalkeeper Matt Turner, defender Walker Zimmerman and Ferreira were the only starters from Major League Soccer, pl

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Alaska lawmakers are discussing whether to sanction a member of the state House who is also a member of the Oath Keepers far-right paramilitary organization, a newspaper reported. Possible actions being discussed include expelling state Rep. David Eastman, a Republican from Wasilla, censure or a vote of disapproval, lawmakers told the Anchorage Daily News. “I think what we’ve been learning about Rep. Eastman is extremely concerning. And I think it needs to be addressed.
Addressing concerns about extremist and far-right groups latching on to the trucker convoy, Conservative Party Leader Erin O’Toole urged truckers to make sure their voice is not drowned out by “extremist elements.” “There should not be violence or intimidation against anyone, including members of the press,” he said.
OTTAWA — It's difficult to forget the tragic scenes that played out in long-term care homes across the country in the early days of the pandemic as residents died in the thousands, isolated from their loved ones. While vaccines have played a major role in protecting homes from the same deadly toll the first wave of COVID-19 took on residents, the impact has still been profound during the Omicron wave. "It's staggering when you just look at the number of homes in outbreak," said Dr. Samir Sinha,
A number of provinces are tweaking their public health protocols to ease restrictions as COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to show signs of stabilizing. Saskatchewan's government said Isolation rules would be relaxed today as the province transitions to treating COVID-19's highly communicable Omicron variant like other common respiratory viruses such as influenza. The changes include no longer requiring close contacts of people who test positive for the coronavirus to self-isolate. In Ontario c
