Following the death of his mother, Vancouver filmmaker Manny Mahal realized he knew precious little about his father, particularly his life in India before he moved to Canada. He decided the best way to learn about his dad was by doing what he knew best — making a film. For My Father, which is available on CBC Gem as part of the Absolutely Canadian series, is the result of Mahal's journey to bridge the cultural gap between himself and his father. Growing up, Mahal said he was very close to his m
Charlottetown drivers should brace for disruption as soon as Tuesday on the long-awaited new roundabout that will replace five-way traffic lights at a key city intersection. That's when construction is set to start at the intersection of Belvedere Avenue, Brackley Point Road, St. Peters Road and Falconwood Drive — soon to be nicknamed "the Vogue Optical roundabout," if the corner's history has anything to do with it. "It's been talked about since about 2008 or even earlier than that," Scott Adam

WASHINGTON (AP) — It's nowhere near the $4 trillion proposal President Joe Biden first launched to rebuild America's public infrastructure and family support systems but the compromise package of inflation-fighting health care, climate change and deficit reduction strategies appears on track toward Senate votes this weekend. The estimated $740 billion proposal, struck by two top negotiators, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and holdout Sen. Joe Manchin, the conservative West Virginia Democra
KEREMEOS, B.C. — Shifting wind patterns Friday put several communities in British Columbia's southern Okanagan on edge as an out-of-control wildfire forced the evacuation of the community of Olalla, while residents of the nearby village of Keremeos were told to prepare to leave. Winds in the area are known to change constantly and their unpredictability has firefighters and emergency officials preparing for the worst, said Tim Roberts, the area's elected regional director. "We are always under t
The suspect in this week's three fatal shootings in and around Montreal was released from a mental healthy facility even though a psychiatrist deemed him a "significant risk to public safety," court documents show. Those documents, which were obtained by Radio-Canada, also show that Abdulla Shaikh had been previously diagnosed with schizophrenia. Following recommendations, the Tribunal Administratif du Québec — which handles cases that are related to mental illness — ordered Shaikh to be release

Petro appointed Irene Velez as Minister of Mines and Energy and Alfonso Prada as Interior Minister, he said on Twitter. HALIFAX — Federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault says he is disappointed Nova Scotia is looking to stall on taxing carbon pollution. Guilbeault is reacting to a July 5 letter from Nova Scotia Environment Minister Tim Halman that voices concern about the province adopting a carbon tax at a time of high inflation. Halman says in the letter to Guilbeault that the federal carbon tax could add 14.4 cents per litre to the cost of gasoline in Nova Scotia starting April 1, 2023. But Guilbeault s
BERLIN (AP) — Sadio Mané scored on his league debut and Bayern Munich routed Eintracht Frankfurt 6-1 to start the new Bundesliga on Friday. Jamal Musiala got two goals and Joshua Kimmich, Benjamin Pavard and Serge Gnabry also scored as Bayern showed no ill effect from Robert Lewandowski’s summer transfer to Barcelona. The sheer dominance against the team that won the Europa League last season shows why Bayern remains the firm favorite for a record-extending 11th consecutive title. The Bavarian p

BEIRUT (AP) — A ship bringing corn to Lebanon’s northern port of Tripoli normally would not cause a stir. But it's getting attention because of where it came from: Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Odesa. The Razoni, loaded with more than 26,000 tons of corn for chicken feed, is emerging from the edges of a Russian war that has threatened food supplies in countries like Lebanon, which has the world's highest rate of food inflation — a staggering 122% — and depends on the Black Sea region for nearly al
MONTREAL — The justice system in Quebec's northern Nunavik region should be better adapted to local culture and have a more permanent presence in the area, according to a new report. Jean-Claude Latraverse, who practiced law in the region for 20 years, wrote in his report that technology also needs to be used to improve access to justice in the region's 14 communities, none of which are accessible by road.
