MONTREAL — Quebec's major party leaders made one final appeal to voters on the eve of Monday's general election as polls continued to show François Legault's party with a considerable lead over his adversaries. A poll on Sunday presented a picture that was relatively unchanged since the beginning of the election: the Coalition Avenir Québec far in the lead, with four other parties in a pack battling for a distant second. The web survey results released Sunday for Quebecor media properties Journa
Windsor hasn't had a municipal election with a voter turnout higher than 40 per cent in more than a decade, and one resident says making voting more accessible could help. "I think voters are having to jump through a lot of hoops and put in a lot of effort just to get their vote in, where it should be made very easy and accessible for them, especially with Windsor's ridiculously low voter turnout," said Ward 10 resident Amna Masoodi. Across Ontario, just 38 per cent of those eligible cast ballot
It's been more than a year-and-a-half since Jana William's remains were found near the Red River at Alfred Avenue in Winnipeg — and her family is still looking for answers. Police declared 28-year-old Jana's death a homicide in March 2021. Charlene Williams, Jana's mom, said she hasn't heard from the detective on her daughter's case since May last year. "I'm mad about it. It's like they don't even care about what's going on with our people, our women and children. They're not doing nothing, they
BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Britain’s immigration minister said Tuesday that it’s unlikely any migrants will be sent to Rwanda this year under a contentious government plan, but vowed to press on with the policy and expand it to more countries. Home Secretary Suella Braverman said that “unfortunately,” a court challenge to the Rwanda plan would have to run its course. Asked if the deportations would start this year, she said: “You’ve got to ask the courts about that … I think it’s going to take l
New statistics from the Saint John Police Force are renewing calls for a suicide-prevention barrier on the Reversing Falls Bridge. Police say the force has responded to 108 incidents at the bridge since 2017, an average of about 20 per year. At Saint John city council on Monday night, Coun. Gary Sullivan said the province has been asked to install a barrier in 2017, and again in 2019, but nothing has happened. "It is sad that this was identified by the Saint John Suicide Prevention Committee in
U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan met with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's chief adviser Ibrahim Kalin in Istanbul on Sunday and discussed "progress on NATO accession for Finland and Sweden", the White House said in a statement. The two, whose meeting was unannounced to the media beforehand, also discussed Turkey's condemnation of Russia's annexation of Ukrainian territory.
British finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng will vow on Monday to stay the course with his planned tax cuts but promised an "iron-clad" commitment to fiscal discipline after a week of market turmoil in response to his growth package. At the start of the governing Conservative Party's annual conference, Kwarteng and Prime Minister Liz Truss have been forced to defend a plan that failed to spell out the financing for deep tax cuts combined with an expensive package of energy subsidies. That lack of detail roiled the markets, with the pound falling to record lows against the dollar and government borrowing costs soaring.

VANCOUVER — Two women who were sheltering in tents on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside have launched a court challenge of an order to dismantle the street encampment. A petition for judicial review filed to the B.C. Supreme Court argues the city's fire chief made the order without procedural fairness to those living on Hastings Street. The city's fire chief issued the order July 25, saying the tents posed an extreme fire and safety risk. The petition, filed last week by law firm Arvay Finlay on beh
