News & Documentary Emmys: PBS & ‘POV’ Lead On Night 2; Pubcaster Tops CNN For Overall Count – Update
UPDATED, 7:11 PM: PBS and its veteran series POV were the big winners on Night 2 of the first multi-ceremony News and Documentary Emmy Awards on Tuesday, which spotlight the documentarties. The pubcaster took five trophies including four for POV. See the full list of Night 2 winners here.

HBO was second with three wins on Tuesday night, followed by National Geographic and Netflix with two apiece (see chart at left). The 41st awards were presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Combined with its five wins on Monday, PBS led all networks and platforms with 10 Emmys overall (see chart below).
Perennial News & Doc Emmy favorite POV took two of the top-tier categories for separate episodes. Its “Midnight Traveler,” which follows Afghan director Hassan Fazili and his family as they flee a Taliban bounty on his head, won for Outstanding Current Affairs Documentary. Episode “The Silence of Others,” about struggle of victims of Spain’s 40-year dictatorship under General Franco as they continue to seek justice four decades into democracy, took the prize for Politics and Government Documentary.
HBO’s True Justice: Bryan Stevenson’s Fight for Equality, about Alabama public interest attorney three decades of advocacy on behalf of the poor, took the Emmy for Outstanding Social Issue Documentary, and premium cable rival Showtime’s 16 Shots won for Investigative Documentary. It examine of the 2014 shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald by Chicago police and the cover-up that ensued.
“As we continue to rise to the challenge of presenting a ‘live’ ceremony during Covid-19 with hosts, presenters and recipients all coming from their homes via the ‘virtual technology’ of the day,” NATAS chief Adam Sharp said, “we continue to honor those that provide us with the necessary tools and information we need to make the crucial decisions that these challenging and unprecedented times call for.”
Combined with Monday’s Night 1 results, CNN finished second overall with eight News & Doc Emmys, edging HBO’s seven. POV and fellow PBS series Frontline tied with HBO’s Vice News Tonight for more total wins with four each. CNN’s New Day took the marquee prize for Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story in a Newscast for its “Roger Stone Raid” story, when the net’s camera captured the arrest of the future convicted felon. HBO’s Vice News Tonight, which was canceled by the premium cabler in June but was revived on Vice TV, won Outstanding Coverage of a News Story in a Newscast for “Collapse of the Caliphate,” about the fall of ISIS.
Outstanding Feature Story in a Newscast went to CBS Sunday Morning for its piece called “What Price?” with correspondent Ted Koppel. And NBC’s Today won the Hard News Feature Story award for its piece “Zone Rouge, an army of children toiling in African mines.

Night 2 of the 41st annual News and Doc Emmys is set for Tuesday, when the documentary prizes will be awarded.
