Why Michael Fassbender Wasn't Oscar Nominated

On January 24 when the 84th Annual Academy Award nominations were announced, the omission that I found most glaring was in the Best Actor category as Michael Fassbender wasn't singled out for his revelatory turn in Shame. Yes, the penis movie. But it was so much more than that.

And while many cite his full frontal turn and America's aversion to in your face sexuality (Fassy's character copulated with multiple partners, with varying degrees of explicitness), Michael has his own theory as to why he wasn't nominated for an Academy Award.

"That peeing cost me an Oscar," he says in the June GQ of a bladder evacuation scene that opens the film and he actually performed on camera ... on the third take. And while he's only half serious, Michael became quite candid while talking about the snub.

"They promised me paradise!" he jokes about Hollywood's warm reception of him and the film, both of which forced his expectations to be raised. "At the beginning people [say], 'You're going to be going to the Oscars,' and you're like, 'Whatever, doesn't matter, don't think so.' But after a while it does penetrate. After a while you're like, 'Anyway, so I'm going to the Oscars…'" he laughs. "And you start to believe it. And I did. I thought I was going. And then I found out I wasn’t and I was upset. I was very upset by it. The first reaction was 'What the f*ck…?'"

But Michael's retroactive frustration stems less from the snub and more from the fact that he began to believe his own hype. "It's a vanity thing. It does become important to you. And it shouldn't." That's why he calls the whole experience, "A good little lesson."
